Power Power Everywhere, Not a Volt in Use…..Until Now!
The Electric Gym Network recognizes two basic facts: 1. People have the potential to create useable electrical energy while they exercise. 2. Creating awareness for energy programs benefits each and all of us.
The collective energy produced by exercising at gyms and health clubs around the nation when harnessed will provide enough energy to power a small city. A vast majority of exercise equipment can be converted to be able to power up the local grid. The highest and best use of the power is within the internal grid of the gym or health club. The average person can generate between 75 and 150 Watts of electricity for a sustained period of time, while a competitive spinning class with 30+ cyclists can easily generate between 4,500 and 5,000 Watts. Collectively, this sustained energy creation translates to 4.5 – 5 Kwh or 4.5 - 5 Kilowatt Hour.
What can be done with this electricity? Considering most small homes run on about half this amount of energy with some regularity then essentially two homes can be energized for one hour for every one hour spin class.
Therefore since there are between 30,000 fitness facilities in North America if only half of these facilities offer a spin class, and lets round it down to 15,000 spin classes. If these classes each generate enough power for 2 homes then it amounts to running 30,000 homes for the duration of the spin class.
If gyms have three spin classes per day then this amounts to the equivalent of over 90,000 homes being powered for the duration of the spin class.
This coupled with the casual daily users of the bikes can easily create the equivalent to power over 120,000 homes.
The Electric Gym Network is launching a program that will keep track of how much energy is being created and awarding individual gym patrons for energy creation as well as group creation of energy.
The best use of the energy at each facility will to send the electricity to a supplementary hot water tank or heater, both of these electric devices can absorb whatever electricity is created at any level.
These devices can operate with both AC and DC electricity.
